On a brief visit to Hingham we decided to call into Chalfonts Tearoom for breakfast.

Cheap as chips!

The tearooms has a counter at the front displaying a selection of cakes.

A fairly traditional interior, the kitchen is at the rear.

This place will please anyone on a diet, item swappers may despair though.

A reasonably priced drinks menu.

Tesco Value sweeteners, Sarsons vinegar and masses of sugar sachets.

A fairly decent cappuccino with a biscuit costing £1.90 seemed fair enough.

The ketchup arrived in a small pot.

Never enough in these small pots though.

A slice of toast comes with each breakfast.

A slight sinking feeling set in when the breakfast arrived.

Very salty bacon and slight egg yolk concern.

One yolk was passable the other was fairly solid though.

Pretty cheap sausages and nice sauteed potato slices.

The tomato tasted of nothing at all.

The veggie breakfast wasn't great either.

A trip out to Hingham seemed like a good opportunity to find a place serving breakfast. We were given directions by the man at the local garage to Chalfonts Tearoom. From the outside it looked quite quaint so we headed inside..

Upon entering - Quite a large place with a counter serving drinks and cakes on your right and a few tables beside it. Go up some steps and you are in a much larger area with plenty of tables and a kitchen to the rear. A fairly relaxing environment with traditional interior, condiments and sugar are on each table, sauces are offered when you place your order. Full table service so choose a table and wait for somebody to come over and take your order, pay at the till on the way out. 6/10

Service - Mildly friendly service could be found here, the lady on the till as we were leaving seemed much friendlier though. Whilst we were there another customer demanded a refund on some baps she had bought insisting she wanted rolls and baps wouldn't do at all. She was given a refund without any problem so they seemed quite reasonable. 6/10

Contents - 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 2 eggs, sauteed potatoes, mushrooms, beans, tomato and a slice of toast. 8/10

Presentation - It looked ok when it arrived but the cheap sausages and ropey looking eggs stood out straight away. 5/10

The food - The sausages reminded me of Richmonds, fairly cheap with a slightly soft and bouncy texture, mildly enjoyable but nothing to get excited about. The bacon was very salty, the eggs had overcooked yolks and the tomato didn't have any flavour at all. The best part was the sauteed potato slices, nice and crispy with a fluffy centre. The mushrooms had quite a slimy texture reminding me of the tinned variety, the beans were ok and the toast was reasonable. The sort of breakfast you eat with a slight feeling of disappointment making you realise you could have cooked a much better one yourself at home. 5/10

Value for money - The full English breakfast cost £5.95 and a cappuccino £1.90. The prices seemed about right for what you got but I have spent this amount on far better breakfasts than this in the past. 5/10

Veggie option - 1 veggie sausage, 1 egg, sauteed potatoes, mushrooms, beans tomato and a slice of toast for £4.50

Overall - A mildly enjoyable breakfast can be found here, the environment seemed pleasant enough and the the service was reasonably friendly. If you're hungry whilst travelling through Hingham its certainly an option but not one to get particularly excited about. 6/10

  1. Deep fried sausages. Nasty. You should make a point of mentioning how lazy that is in every establishment that serves them.

  2. I got caught out there too, over a year ago I reckon, how sad that enough people accept sub standard and allow these places to carry on!

  3. I think this place may be deserving of a revisit. They have their meats supplied by a local butcher now
